Caveman Cuisine: Pumpkin Spice Smoothie


I'm a sucker for the holidays. As soon as that first real cold snap hits and it's officially "sweater weather" (remember, I live in Florida) its on. I love the traditions, the cheap decorative "cinnamon brooms," the "A Christmas Story" marathons, and of course, the food.

As a slightly food-obsessed (OK, extremely food obsessed) individual, the holidays present an abundant opportunities for cooking, baking, and eating. To me, the holiday larder, chock full of pumpkins and other winter squash, hearty meat stews, and aromatic spices is something akin to a painter's palate.

Separate colors, textures, and stories are woven together. Memories of the past and dreams of the future swirl together and become indistinguishable.

So, it seemed fitting to bring these elements into play with an expedient take on a holiday staple, pumpkin pie.

Ingredients:

4oz pureed pumpkin (I used unsweetened canned pumpkin)
Pinch cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and clove
2-3 drops pure vanilla extract
1 tsp maple syrup
Ice
8oz almond milk
8oz cold filtered water
Small handful pecans (~15-20)
2 scoops unflavored whey protein powder

Directions:

Blend all ingredients together until smooth. Add water if a thinner consistency is desired and top with a dash of cinnamon.
